Almost New Year’s Eve

Christmas is over, and the New Year is not far away. During this time of Covid-19, I have been filling my time up consumed by art videos, also, drawing, and painting anything that can’t escape from my sight.

This drawing (which has an unprofessional shadow in the left-hand corner because I took it with my I-Phone) started off with just a simple green and red frame. Then problem one presented itself. I got water droplets on the right-hand side of the frame that partially melted what I had previously thought was waterproof ink.

That is why I have my holly decorations slightly dropped down from the center on the right and left outside edges. This is in a watercolor sketchbook, and I had intended on mixing watercolor with permanent ink. Instead, I mixed watercolor with water-soluble ink.

Hope you managed to have a Joyful Christmas in spite of challenges.

Man vs. Beast

Man vs Beast - I guess you could call this a Covid-19 story. After spending 2 months not being able to see family members, or having to visit with them through glass, we finally got a chance to visit through the screen window (6+ ft. apart} at their house. While we were visiting, I noticed a neighborhood cat that came strolling by. I managed to snap this shot. My drawing isn’t totally accurate; however, I feel like it works. I liked the contrast of the man made car wheel next to the brave looking cat. It almost had a wild baby cougar look to it, but it just seemed to be a regular cat.

Wild Experiment in Acrylics

Sheltering in place

This is what happens on about day seventeen of sheltering in place! You begin to make up your own outdoors and your own wild spring flowers!

On days 18 and 19, you begin to resort to a self-portrait challenge! More on that later.

And when you keep walking past your painting and seeing things in it that are bothering you. Now I see some shapes in the background that I liked better in the earlier version.

I hope to finish this experiment someday.

WORKING IN SKETCHBOOK

Lately, I have been working in my sketchbooks. This is my latest drawing that I did in pastels of a photo that I took this past Thanksgiving week at a restaurant called Mi Familia in San Antonio.

January 2020

Winter can tend to be a good time to simply experiment with your art. I decided to take one particular pose and experiment using Zen Doodle designs in order to see how strongly design sets the tone of a drawing.

Of course I knew ahead of time that design has a very strong influence, but oftentimes seeing is really believing.

I personally like the softness of the second pose, but what if denoting strength was your objective?
